Groups are encouraged, with a maximum of 4 members

The purpose of this project is to analyze the economic situation/story of a given country using the

tools we’ve discussed this semester: Institutional Economics, different measures of Social Welfare,

and the Solow Model. Use these and any other tools at your disposal to describe life in your chosen

referencing the past history of that country, and making a prediction for the future of that

y, all while contrasting this country against Canada and/or the United States and similar

countries to your choice. For example, estimate the A term from the Solow model and compare it to

these controls to compare technology levels – can you determine what’s causing the difference?

Savings rates? Depreciation rat? How has the A term changed over time? Find measures of

institutional strength or weakness in your countries and see how they have changed over time.

What policies are causing this? Are average incomes stagnating while inequality worsens or

improves? Answer questions like these to earn full marks. Do not attempt to fully solve the Solow

model for your country, as it’s quite onerous to do so. If you do attempt it, run your numbers by me

first to check and see if you’re on the right track.

All sections of your paper must tie into each other for full marks.

Of all submissions, the same country can only be used 3 times by students/groups. Each group

must email me at mlsolyom@sfu.ca starting at 8pm June 30 th  with their group members (names

AND student numbers) and their chosen country. Countries will be given on a first-come, first-serve

basis. I will be updating the following Google Docs sheet  http://bit.ly/1BjY3C4 ...

…as submissions come in. If you submit a country already taken I will list either a 2 nd or 3 rd choice

you give me. The Google Doc will list the student numbers of those who have each country. Do NOT

email with your choice country before 8pm. I will ignore you.

The paper should be 4 to 5 pages of xt, 11 point font single spaced. ~2100-2500 words

Your group must submit both a printed and digital version of the paper.

-  Professionalism will be rewarded. Sloppy writing and spelling mistakes will count against your

mark. Well labeled diagrams with good descriptions are appreciated.

-  Some starting points:

o The World Bank, The Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED)

Plagiarism will result in a mark of zero. This includes altered Wikipedia results.
