Baba, DM, Jackson, PV, Papino, MN & Grose, S 2008, ‘The importance of exercise to obesity treatment’,
International Journal of Human Sciences, vol. 9, iss.3, pp. 141-160.
The focus of this article is to emphasis the important relationship that exists between exercise and the positive impact this can have on a person’s weight. The authors conducted extensive research over a period of 5 years involving 3000 subjects ranging in age from 15 to 65 and found that those participants who engaged in minimal physical activity were more likely to be diagnosed as being obese. The information from this source will be used to argue the point that exercise, and not the consumption of junk foods, is a major contributor to the obesity epidemic. The scope and extended time period of the research make this a reliable source to use in my work. Furthermore, this article appeared in a peer-reviewed journal and the conclusions reached by the authors are based on medical analysis of the data and therefore appear logical. All authors are associated with higher educational institutions and have qualifications that are relevant to this area of study.

The purpose of this article was to investigate claims of the rising number of children in Australia now being diagnosed as obese and to determine if a lack of exercise was contributing to this condition. The authors conducted studies across 150 schools in New South Wales involving children from kindergarten to year 6 and found that a high percentage of children did not engage in any physical activity outside of school hours. The authors concluded that these were the children who were most likely to be obese or be at risk of being diagnosed as being obese. This article will be useful in supporting the claim that a lack of regular exercise is a major factor contributing to the obesity epidemic rather than the marketing and consumption of junk food. This is a reliable source as the article appears in an academic journal and all claims by the authors are substantiated by data gathered from the study. Both authors have degrees relevant to this field and are currently employed at the University of NSW.
