GUIDELINES:
Assignment 2 is the formal academic essay that arises from the preparation you did for Assignment 1. You must choose the same question and film for both assignments. The questions are included here to refresh your memory.
1.    The Hollywood studio system (roughly 1920-1960) was infamous for economic rationalization, development of the star system and the production of a lush coherent style. Discuss how one of the following films: Singin’ in the RainFar From Heavenor True Grit can be analysed in relation to the studio system. You are free to explore whatever angle takes your interest but you might consider one or more of the following in your essay: plot, industrial relations, or homage.
2.    Critics and audiences often describe genre films as ‘formulaic entertainment’ but popular films such as these nevertheless often express deep anxieties and tensions that characterise the social and historical context within which the film was made. Making reference to one of the following films Singin in the RainFar From HeavenIn The Mood for Love, or True Gritdiscuss how these anxieties are expressed.
3.    Melodrama is often characterized by its heightened style and the deep repression of its female protagonists. With reference to either In the Mood For Loveor Far From Heaven discuss how mise-en-scene and cinematography express what the characters in these films cannot.
4.    For much of its history Hollywood films have been considered quintessentially patriarchal. Critics have argued that female characters exist largely as spectacle while male characters act with agency. Transgressing these norms has been rarely tolerated. Discuss how gender is represented in one of the following films VertigoSingin in the RainFar From HeavenTrue Grit. Consider how your selection conforms to orthodox views of gender in Hollywood film and how it might subvert them
The objective of Assignment 2 is to assess your analytical and writing skills in an argument-driven essay that supports your ideas with specific examples from your chosen film. Your film analysis in Assignment 2 should draw upon the close reading skills you have acquired for your mid-term exam and have practised in tutorial exercises.

To achieve a good grade you must demonstrate the following:
·         Ability to address the topic using close and specific analysis of the film you select
·         Indication that you understand relevant material from lectures, tutorials, viewings and readings (required and recommended).
·         A strong argument that shows you can think independently and apply the concepts presented in class and in the readings
·         Evidence of independent research, incorporated where relevant to support your analysis
·         An ability to discuss both the technical and aesthetic aspects of filmmaking
·         An ability to link logically organised ideas and examples
·         An ability to express your analysis of examples clearly and concisely
·         Competent use of sentence structure and paragraph structure
·         Few, if any, grammatical or spelling mistakes
·         Accurate referencing within the essay (including in-text references and correct use of quotations and quotation marks), and at the end of the essay in a ‘Reference Cited’ section
