Chinese online talk show as a new form of popular entertainment: comparing three Chinese talk show
 
Relevance
Online talk show is the product of the rapid development of the Internet. Since 2012, online talk show has a rapid development and gradually become a new form of popular entertainment in China. Such these programs are well spread in the short term with a rising trend. Its emergence and growth have an important significance and value on media industry. Logic show, Baozou Big Event and Xiaosong Pedia are three famous online talk shows and the representatives of Chinese online talk shows. They have their own style and different content and business modes. My dissertation is going to compare these three Chinese online talk shows aiming to explore the popular phenomenon of Chinese online talk show.
 
Research questions
What are the similarities and differences among three famous Chinese online talk shows which are Logic show, Baozou Big Event and Xiaosong Pedia? How do these three online talk shows represent Chinese online talk show?
 
Methodology
My research objects are three Chinese online talk shows which are Logic show, Baozou Big Event and Xiaosong Pedia, so I will use comparative case studies as research method.
 
Five aspects including history, ownership, target audience, content and business mode will be compared. Regarding for the target audience, some identities such as age, gender and knowledge level will be described and compared. I will also compare the topic, host, audience participation among three online talk shows to illustrate the similarities and differences of the online talk show content. In terms of the business mode, these online talk shows adopt multiple business modes such as advertising, copyright, extension of industry chain or crowed funding. I will describe how they use these business modes to gain profits.
 
Finally, I will summarize the comparison of these three Chinese online talk shows to explore the popular phenomenon of Chinese online talk show.
 
Key theories and concepts
Individual branding- Brand is the essence of profit mode. Building the individual brand is an important way to expand influence and gain profits.
 
The Long Tail- Compared with the traditional television program and other online video program online talk show is still in the position of tail. Online talk show can gather the fragmented consumers and investors who have similar demand. The combination of long tail effect and individual branding power help the online talk show to create a new business mode such as crowd funding.
