The topic is chosen by the student and developed with the advice and support of a supervisor. The project is written up in a minor dissertation, allowing the student to demonstrate advanced skills in research, writing and project management. Students are encouraged to consider the project not only as a formal requirement for the degree, but also as contributing to a portfolio of professional development. Mode of delivery Caulfield (Day) Workload requirements Minimum total expected workload equals 288 hours per semester Additional workload requirements 12 points, SCA Band 1, 0.250 EFTSL In addition to a minimum of 288 hours of independent study, students are required to attend four 2- hour seminars (refer Unit Schedule below) and to meet with their project supervisor at least three times during the semester. Academic overview Learning outcomes On successful completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate: (1) Increased knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary for independent research; (2) An enhanced capacity to formulate and research communication issues; (3) An enhanced capacity to analyse and evaluate arguments, and to understand critical approaches to the planning, writing and editing of a research topic; (4) A capacity to design, manage, and carry out a research project. Teaching and learning approach This unit represents the culmination of the Master of Arts offered in the Communications and Media Studies Postgraduate Program. It allows students to bring what they have learned to bear on a topic of their own choosing (subject to approval) and to develop an extended treatment of this topic. Students are provided with a supervisor who works with them on a one-to-one basis. There will also be 2-hour seminars on Fridays in weeks 1, 2, 5 and 8 comprised of seminars and workshops. These will be incredibly helpful for workshopping basic research skills as well as your own topics, questions and methodologies. The Faculty of Arts has a minimum tutorial/seminar attendance requirement of 75%. Should a student fail to attend 75% of the scheduled seminars, the following outcome will be applied: ● 50% pass only possible for final unit result. The School of Media, Film and Journalism requires also that students who miss more than two tutorials/seminars without a medical certificate or some other acceptable form of documentation may be required to submit supplementary assessments tasks in order to pass the unit.
