ARCH1080: INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURE & ENABLING SKILLS
PROJECT TWO: VISUAL DESCRIPTION
The aim of this project is to extend your understanding of a single building and to develop your skills in visual
description. It requires you to produce a precise digital model of your case study using SketchUp.
Present your case study through a SketchUp digital model including the following:
Site: the immediate site/surrounds of the building.
Form: external and internal.
Materials: we do not expect realistic representation of materials. However, we do expect that the
model represents the material character of the case study using colour, texture, etc.
Models should show enough detail to understand the thickness of walls, the dimensions of architectural
elements such as columns, doors and windows, stairs and handrails. Elements such as fittings (toilets, basins)
and kitchen benches should be shown where necessary. It is important to be consistent with the level of detail
you include. The model should only deal with visible form, so hidden structure should be omitted.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Google SketchUp can be downloaded at www.sketchup.com.

Consider presenting in “Engineering” or “Simple” style – these look the cleanest. Using furniture, light fittings,
trees etc. from other sources is permitted, but make sure they are carefully selected to match the intention and
details of the building.
SUBMISSION
Due: Week 8 Tutorial. Electronic submission due no later than midnight.
Requirements:
The electronic model must be submitted to in SketchUp format to the submit folder for this course found at
\\coursefolders.fbe.unsw.edu.au\DATA\Courses\BENV1080 (if accessing from the UNSW network). The file
must contain 6 saved “scenes” showing different aspects of the building: siting, organisation in plan(s),
organisation in section(s), elevation and other selected scenes. Avoid very large and complex geometries,
especially detailed components which have been copied many times – if the model runs slowly on your
computer, it will run slowly on ours because Sketchup does not support parallel processing. The opening
scene or view must be saved without shadows to enable quicker loading. You can achieve a fine result with
files of between 4 and 15 Mb. These can be moved around easily.
Plagiarism Declaration: Include a scanned copy of a signed Plagiarism Declaration, the text of which can be
downloaded from the BE website within the student intranet.
Criteria
The assignment will be marked according to:
Neatness and organisation of the model
Accuracy of the building representation
Usefulness of the chosen “scenes” i.e. how well do they convey the point they are meant to make?
Degree of detail.
