University of South Australia – BUSS 3083 – Strategic Financial Analysis STRATEGIG FINANCIAL ANALYSIS Topic 2 – Questions for pre-class preparation INSTRUCTIONS Questions from (or adapted from) Chapter 2 Palepu et al (2015) Case Study Questions (read ‘Qantas’ case study at the end of Chapter 2 Palepu et al (2015) prior to attempting these case study questions). Note – as required in a capstone course, this week’s case study will rely on knowledge from early studies (e.g. economics and finance) and skills obtained through your degree (e.g. interpreting information from exhibits, tables, and graphs). Please prepare your responses to the case questions below as if you were a consultant hired to prepare a report/presentation to a group of “risk averse investors with limited knowledge”. You will be assessed on your: 1) quality of response to the question, 2) use of analytical frameworks (e.g. 5 forces model), 3) application of frameworks to the question, 4) insight for target audience (who are defined as "risk averse investors with limited knowledge" and 5) conclusions/recommendations. Much emphasis is placed on points 3) and 4) so please ensure that you tailor your discussion accordingly. 1) Analyse the competitive forces facing Qantas, using the ‘five forces’ framework from the strategy literature. Evaluate Qantas’s prospects for profitability and growth in the next five years. 2) Identify the limitations of the Porter’s 5 forces model analysis. What other factors do and could affect Qantas’s competitive environment? 3) Discuss Qantas’s competitive strategy since 2000. Is it successful, and is it sustainable? 4) What is Qantas’s competitive strategy, if any? Apply a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis to it. 5) What has been Qantas’s corporate strategy across its domestic and international divisions since 1992? How has that strategy changed in response to market changes? Have any changes been initiated by Qantas? 6) Prepare an executive summary of recommendations to the Qantas executive, based on your analysis. Identify three key changes to its structure and/or operations. 7) Compare and contrast Qantas' strategy and business operations to one of its main competitors? What are the sources of Qantas' competitive advantage? 8) Conduct a PESTEL (political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental) analysis on the airline industry. What are key risks and opportunities that Qantas can exploit? Can airlines that compete co-exist as partners in such a group? What lessons can be learned here? 10) Analyse different incidents that have affected the airline industry in the last 10 years and what implications these could have on Qantas' operations. Suggest ways that Qantas can manage the impact of these incidents from affecting its performance.
